Our commitment to social responsibility has focused
on four areas: community involvement, environmental
stewardship, safety and health, and product usage.
We are proud to actively support the communities
in which we operate.
We sponsor social,
cultural, educational and sports activities. We
have a policy of adopting roads and schools. In
the aftermath of natural disasters such as hurricanes,
floods and droughts, we provide emergency relief
where we can. We supply water, equipment and workers
to clear roads from fallen trees and debris.
Over the years,
our company has planted thousands trees and developed
a successful method for propagating endangered flora
such as Daphnosis helleriana and other lesser known
species.
Our staff members
visit schools to explain the work we do to children
in the hope that they will become interested in
becoming construction engineers, operators or miners.
In addition, we invite them to participate in organized
tours of our plant.
For the past ten years, we have been offering monthly
seminars open to the general public to provide instruction
on the techniques involved in installing our products.
Thousands of people have received training in our
facilities and many of them have developed their
own small businesses. In recognition of the concrete
masons’ important contribution to our island,
we created the Puerto Rico Concrete Mason’s
Fair. The event seeks to hone the expertise of concrete
masons, promote their trade and foster interest
in masonry among the young. In addition, we sponsor
a public library and a museum.
In our view, environmental
stewardship is necessary to ensure a satisfying
quality of life for future generations. At the same
time, it involves providing materials that address
the needs of the present generation. We are aware
that our business activities can have a significant
impact on the environment and; therefore, we feel
compelled to conserve the natural resources we use
through increased recycling and the use of secondary
materials.
By recycling
fly ash, we conserve natural aggregates and reduce
the use of cement. We are committed to reducing
noise, dust, traffic and vibrations from our operations
through constant monitoring, accurate record keeping,
the effective application of controls, and by suggesting
alternatives to minimize these effects. Monitoring
and responding to concerns about environmental issues
are an essential part of our commitment to maintain
good relations with local communities.
